Abstract

Tomato, chili, and cauliflower plants are strategic horticultural commodities that are susceptible to attacks by various major pests such as whiteflies, thrips, Plutella xylostella and aphids that can cause significant reductions in crop yields. Pest managemen still depand on synthetic pesticides that are reported to cause various negative impacts such as pest resistance, resurgence, environmental pollution, and hazardous residues so that more environmentally friendly control alternatives are needed. Tobacco extract (Nicotiana tabacum) containing the active compounds nicotine, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins has the potential as a botanical pesticide because it has been prove effective in decrease populations and damage caused by pest attacks on Solanaceae and Brassicaceae plants, thus having the opportunity to support a sustainable horticultural cultivation system. The research was conducted at the Horticulture Experimental and Practicum Garden, Lampung State Polytechnic from June to November 2025 with the materials used in this study were Gustavi F1 tomatoes, Kopay chilies, East West Seed PM 3000 cauliflower and dried tobacco leaves. A total of 250 grams of dried tobacco leaves were soaked in 5 liters of water for 24 hours. Application was carried out by mixing 250 ml of tobacco leaf soaking water into 5 liters of water and applying it twice a week, similar to the usual application of synthetic pesticides. The application of the tobacco leaf-based botanical pesticide effectively reduced the intensity of pest attack on chili plants by 35.30%, on tomatoes by 68.93%, and on cauliflower by 46%. Therefore, the use of tobacco extract has the potential to be a safer alternative for pest control and supports the implementation of sustainable agricultural systems.
